The body of Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo was found Tuesday morning, Transport and Communications Secretary Mar Roxas II said.
“At 8:15 a.m. kumpirmadong ang isa sa mga katawan ay kay Sec, Robredo,” Roxas said.
Divers found the plane’s fuselage around 7:30 a.m. Robredo’s body was found inside the fuselage at 7:45 a.m. His body was brought to shore at 8:40 a.m.
Roxas said the remains of the Interior secretary was found 800 meters off Masbate at 180 feet deep.
The country had been in prayers since Saturday after Sec. Robredo’s plane was said to have crashed on a beach in Masbate. And people had been hoping for a miracle after his aide survived the crash. Sadly, Robredo’s and pilots Jessup Bahinting’s and Kshitiz Chand’s were found today inside the crashed sunken plane.
Robredo had been considered as a sterling example in public service due to his promotion of transparency and accountability. In his tenure as Mayor of Naga City, he promoted greater public participation in governance, eventually making the city as one of the most eminent urban centers of the country.
But Secretary Jesse is best known for his humility, honesty and integrity – characteristics which one can only hope would be imbibed by more public servants in this country.
May the good Secretary and the pilots rest in peace. The world is a sadder place in losing some of its better men.
Back in 2006, when I was still with ABS-CBN Cebu, I also had the fortune of meeting the pilot, Capt. Jessup Bahinting. I interviewed him at the opening of his flight school at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport. Bahinting is also a legend in aviation circles in Cebu for emergency flights and rescue missions.
